Dear Utility company:
It's nothing personal, we just hate paying large utility bills. So the focus in this series of articles is to reduce our monthly electric bill.
Article One: Electric lighting can contribute up to 25% of the average home energy budget. An easy solution, Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs). Wait, don't stop reading! We know CFLs started off looking pretty bad however, the technology has really improved. Don't believe us? Take a look at this example.
Can you tell which two lights in our bathroom light fixture contain the CFL bulbs? The bulbs in this comparison are two 60 watt incandescent bulbs and two 13 watt CFL bulbs. (The answer will be in Article Two of our Savings Unplugged series.)
Our bathroom has two of these fixtures, two can lights in the ceiling and an additional light in the closet. Assuming all of the bulbs were 60 watts the combined total is 660 watts of electrics consumption. Replacing these bulbs with CFLs lowered our consumption to 143 watts. That's less consumption than three of incandescent lights. Did we say easy solution to save money? What could be easier than this?
